The successor to New Holland’s M/60 series was designated the TM. Its appearance was almost unchanged. The doors were now full-glass, and the control panel for the three-point hitch was new.
The engines were familiar Ford 7.5-litre Powerstars. The model numbers now referred to ISO horsepower, so the DIN ratings were about 10 hp lower than the model designation. Only the smallest model, the TM115, was naturally aspirated. Torque increases ranged from 34 to 40 percent, and the flat-rated power band spanned about 200–400 rpm.
In Finland the standard transmission was the Dual Command 24+12 (later 24+24), meaning the creeper gears had been dropped from the base equipment. As an option there was the Range Command with a six-speed powershift, which came standard on the two largest models. A new optional feature on the biggest models was the full powershift with creeper gears, offering 28+12 speeds. This version, based on the Range Command, was called Power Command. Its push-button gear selection and automatic functions were similar to those of the Range Command, with the addition of an automatic mode that selected the most appropriate gear based on engine load, engine speed and travel speed. Headland management could be programmed to shift down when the hitch was raised. All models were fitted with a hydraulic shuttle except for the Shuttle Command, which was not offered in Finland.
The PTO came standard with 540, 750 and 1,000 rpm speeds. The driveline PTO was moved to the options list. A soft-start PTO was a new feature. For the front axle, in addition to the standard version there was a TerraGlide hydropneumatic suspension or a steerable SuperSteer axle. Both options could not be combined on the same tractor. In Finland more than half of all TMs were ordered with the SuperSteer axle. SuperSteer reduced the turning radius by a couple of metres, added 160 mm to the wheelbase and 200 kg to the weight. Cab suspension was also available, based on coil springs and shock absorbers.
The closed-center hydraulic system’s pump output was increased to 106–116 litres per minute. The Bosch draft-control top link still used a conventional lever. Hitch capacity on the two largest models, aided by two auxiliary lift cylinders, was 8,435 kg. There were four external hydraulic valves as standard, each with flow control, float position and pressure release; single-lever hydraulic control was an option.
In summer 2002 the updated TM120–155 models and the heavier TM175 and TM190 went on sale.
