In 1956, IH Germany introduced the Farmall D-series tractors, which used the same pre-chamber diesel engines as the previous models. The model designation indicated the number of cylinders and power output in DIN horsepower. The design was more angular than before. Unlike the earlier 5-speed transmission, all models featured a ZF 6+1-speed transmission. The front axle was suspended. The most popular model in the series was the most powerful 3-cylinder D-324 with 24 horsepower.

In 1957, a hydraulic hand clutch – Agriomatic – was introduced as an optional accessory for the 3-cylinder models, with 8+2 gears available when using it. The gear could be released with the hand clutch, meaning the clutch pedal was not needed to start moving.
