International 554-844

The German mid-range B-series of IH consisted of models 554-844 from 1974 onwards. In the previous lineup (553-824), sales were focused on the smaller models, but the new series’ favorite was the 844-S (80 hp).

The new series featured a synchronized 8+4 gearbox with an additional mechanical reduction gear. In the early years, the third option was the 12+4-speed Agriomatic S. The gear selectors were located under the steering wheel on the dashboard. Lifting capacity was significantly increased compared to before, and the hydraulics were otherwise also improved. The production lineup included versions equipped with both dry and oil-immersed disc brakes. In Finland, the 844 had oil-immersed brakes. The hydraulics featured draft control. The cab was initially installed locally (in Finland, the pictured four-wheel-drive model was by Turla). In 1976, the factory-installed Comfort 2000 was introduced (see 946-1246). At the same time, the gear layout was changed and the reduction gear became synchronized.

In Finland, the 844 was initially sold, replaced in 1976 by the 844-S, which had a 4.4-liter engine. The 844 models had a wheelbase 27 cm longer than the previous 824. Four-wheel-drive models were equipped with a ZF APL 1552 front axle, and for heavy-duty use, a more robust PL 3052 was also available for the 844.
