Info

In 1964, Case introduced its first four-wheel-drive tractor, the 1200 Traction King. All the wheels were the same size, but unlike its competitors, the Traction King was articulated rather than frame-steered. Its engine was a 7.4-liter turbocharged unit, and its power take-off delivered 120 hp. Steering was hydrostatic and the brakes were hydraulically operated.

In 1969 the 1470 Traction King was unveiled, featuring four-wheel steering as a new option. The tractor was still available with two-wheel steering at a price that was 800 dollars lower. The engine was now a direct-injection 8.3-liter unit, and the transmission offered 8 forward and 4 reverse gears. The cab was still largely made of sheet metal.

In 1971 the 1470 was replaced by the redesigned 2470 Traction King, rated at 213 hp (SAE), which retained the same 8.3-liter engine and added a 12+4 partial powershift gearbox. In 1974 the model range was joined by the intercooled 2670 (256 hp SAE), and in 1977 by the 11.0-liter 2870 (300 hp SAE). The 2870’s engine was manufactured by Scania.

On the base model only the front wheels were steerable. In Europe four-wheel steering was standard; its operating modes are shown in the illustration. The high-spec cab’s noise level was 81–83 dB. The three-point hitch was upgraded to Category III, although only about 30–40 percent of the four-wheel-drive tractors were sold with the hitch installed. In 1974 the yellow paint was changed to white and the orange trim to red.

The data has been collected primarily from brochures. In some cases, sources contain conflicting information. In such cases, we have attempted to select the most reliable information. There is particularly significant variation in speed data, which varies depending on factors such as tire size. For tires, only the size most commonly used in Finland is listed. Other changes during the model history have been addressed in the text section. For the front axle lock, the Finnish term "hammaslukko" (gear lock) is used for all 100% locks.
