Steyr developed a stepless transmission in the 1990s at the same time as ZF, and the situation did not change even after ZF purchased Steyr’s transmission production. The Case IH and Steyr S-Tronic transmission was announced at the end of 1997, but it only went on sale at the beginning of 2000. The transmission was fundamentally quite similar to the ZF stepless transmission used by JD (John Deere) and DF (Deutz-Fahr). It had four speed ranges, and the share of mechanical drive in the main working areas was greater than in Fendt’s Vario. Instead of a throttle pedal, there was a speed pedal, and electronics adjusted the engine speed suitably, taking into account power demand and efficiency. The transmission was controlled via buttons on the armrest handle. The direction change lever was located on the armrest as well as under the steering wheel on the left side.
