Bautz AS 120 - AL 122

Bautz had an established position as a manufacturer of harvesters, and in 1936 it began designing a tractor. However, production did not start until after the war in 1948, when a small series of 11-horsepower models was produced. The following year, Bautz acquired the rights to the 14-horsepower Zanker tractor. Production of this BS 14 AS model also remained limited. In 1950, an improved model AS 14 was introduced into production. It was equipped with a single-cylinder MWM diesel engine. It had 4+1 gears. From this model onward, Bautz's color was standardized as green.

The first Bautz tractor to reach significant production numbers was the 1951 AS 120. It stood out from competitors due to its 2-cylinder engine. The power of the 1.25-liter MWM diesel was initially 12 hp and later 14 hp. The gearbox, manufactured by Bautz itself, had 4+1 gears. There was a PTO at both the rear and the center running at 540 rpm. Standard features included a differential lock, electric start, steering brakes, and a separate handbrake. The 1954 model introduced a fifth gear.

In autumn 1952, the air-cooled AS 122 was introduced alongside it. It had a single-cylinder 0.9-liter MWM engine. At this stage, a hydraulic 3-point hitch also became available.

In 1956, Bautz's model designations were clarified so that air-cooled models received the AL code and water-cooled models the AW code. The small models henceforth were AW 120 and AL 122. The AS/AW 120 was Bautz's overwhelmingly best-selling model with a production total of 11,682 units.
