Normag

The last technical and design updates to Normag tractors were made in 1956. The Kornett I and II were succeeded by the K 15 a and K 18 a models. The successors to Faktor II and III were respectively the F 22 and F 30. In addition to these, the lineup included the small F 12 and the large NG 35 M and NG 45 L.

In 1955, O&K became the owner of Normag. The production capacity of the Normag factory was needed for manufacturing O&K machines, so unprofitable tractor production was discontinued in 1957. A Luxembourg agricultural machinery dealer assembled a small number of tractors from Normag components under the name NH and later Lux-Trac until around 1960.

Tractors

Normag K 15 a - K 18 a - F 22 - F 30

In the summer of 1953, Normag introduced a small 2-stroke air-cooled F 12 model, which soon received the name Kornett I. The 1-cylinder diesel engine had an output of 12 hp. Fuel consumption was promised to be lower than that of four-stroke engines. The gearbox was Normag's own 5+1.

The following year, a similar Kornett II was introduced, with 16 hp and a suspension on the front axle.

At this stage, Normag expanded its manufacturing capacity with the goal of producing 60 tractors daily.

Normag Kornett I II

Small 1-cylinder tractors sold very well in Germany, and in spring 1952 Normag introduced the earlier smaller C 10, with only 10 horsepower. The diesel engine was manufactured by Farymann. The transmission offered 5 forward and 2 reverse gears. Power was transmitted to the rear axle by two V-belts. Equipment included a differential lock and electric start. Almost everything else, such as the power take-off and lifting device, was optional. The portal-type front axle improved ground clearance.

The later small Normag tractor was the short-lived N 12. It was equipped with either a 2-stroke ILO or a 4-stroke Farymann diesel engine producing 12 hp. The transmission had 6 forward and 2 reverse gears.

Normag C 10 - N 12

At the beginning of 1951, the NG 15 was replaced by the Faktor I model (NG 16). The 1-cylinder 15-horsepower engine remained unchanged. The transmission was replaced with a ZF 5+1-speed, and the rear axle was completely new. Standard equipment included front axle suspension, power take-off, and differential lock. A hydraulic lift was available as an optional extra.

Just a year later, the model changed to Faktor I (F 16), which featured a larger cylinder bore, longer wheelbase, and a 12-volt electrical system.

The Faktor II (NG 20) was developed from the NG 23. In addition to the updated appearance, differences included a ZF transmission and lower power output. Initially, the power was 20 hp, increasing to 22 hp from 1953 onwards.

The Faktor III (NG 28) was most commonly equipped with an 8+2-speed transmission. The 2.58-liter 2-cylinder engine produced 28 hp.

Normag Faktor I II III

At the DLG exhibition in 1950, Normag introduced a larger model, the NG 35. Its engine was initially a 2.85-liter MWM, but the same year it was replaced by their own 3.1-liter 2-cylinder pre-chamber diesel. The transmission was also produced in-house, and over the years options of 4+1, 5+1, and 8+2 speeds were seen. Wheelbases and other dimensions also varied quite a bit, at least between different brochures. The PTO was available as standard with 560 rpm and optionally with 1020 rpm. Additionally, many versions had a central PTO, for example for side-mounted mowers.

In spring 1952, the NG 45 equipped with a 4-cylinder Hanomag engine was introduced. The transmission was a ZF 5+1. The standard model had a 176 cm wheelbase and the L-model 206 cm. Sales remained in the dozens.

Normag NG 35 - NG 45

Schmidt, Krantz & Co. AG, which engaged in mining industry and mining machine manufacturing, established a subsidiary Normag GmbH in Nordhausen in 1936 for tractor production. It managed to produce about 5,000 units of 20…25-horsepower tractors before the factory, located in the Soviet occupation zone, relocated west to Zorge in 1946. Most of the factory’s machinery was brought along.

Already in Nordhausen, the NG 23 model was introduced in 1944, which became Normag-Zorge's main product in its early years. The engine was a 2.1-liter MWM, but in 1948 it was replaced by Normag’s own 2.36-liter pre-chamber diesel largely based on MWM technology, producing 24 hp. The first models had no hood at all, the next featured a box-shaped design, but from 1949 onwards, the tractor was equipped with a modernly styled hood.

The NG 23 transmission was 4+1. Some versions also featured 5+1 and 8+2 transmissions. The electrical system was either 6 or 12 volts. The optional lift device operated with compressed air. Technical specifications varied considerably in different years. In 1949, the single-cylinder NG 15 was introduced, differing little from the NG 23 except for the engine.

About 120 Normag units were imported to Finland by Suomen Autoteollisuus Oy. The Vakola test report noted numerous deficiencies both in technical performance and tractor durability, and Normag gained a poor reputation in Finland. However, in Germany, it is somewhat appreciated as a collector’s tractor.
