Steyr’s larger CVT series was previewed at many trade shows before its official launch in spring 2009. For the broader market the model was sold as the Case IH Puma CVX and the New Holland T7000 Autocommand. The engines were the same 6.7-liter NEF units as in the other models in the group’s power class. The first to go on sale were the 195–225 models. A few months later the range was extended with the 165–180 models.
The transmission featured four mechanical ranges, the gaps between which were smoothed out by automation and two alternately engaging clutches, without the driver noticing. The hydrostatic share of the drive varied between 0 and 30 percent. Speed could be controlled via the accelerator pedal, the multifunction lever on the armrest, or a thumb-operated cruise control. The set speed could be briefly overridden by the accelerator pedal. Accelerator-pedal operation was made easier by three speed presets that the driver could program. Compared with the New Holland version, the Puma CVX offered a couple of user-friendly differences: the command handle remained in the position corresponding to the chosen speed instead of snapping back to the center as on the NH, and the lever-set speed could be temporarily overridden with the accelerator pedal. The 50 km/h top speed was achieved at just 1,550 rpm, and in the 40 km/h version the maximum speed came at 1,450 rpm.
With a noise level of 69 dB, the cab was one of the quietest on the market. Standard equipment included automatic air conditioning and cab suspension.
