Gleaner M / L

The largest G model in the Gleaner lineup was redesigned into the M model, and alongside it came a more powerful L model. The little brother of the G, the F, continued with its old name but received some of the same updates. The M and L were dimensionally identical in length. The width of the threshing mechanism was 102 cm in the M and 122 cm in the L. The larger model had five concaves. The L model could be equipped with a cutting platform of up to 24 feet.
The structure of the threshing mechanism remained distinctive but differed from previous models. Instead of a straw walker in front of the threshing drum, there was still an additional feed drum. The straw walker was now perforated like in other combines. Underneath it was a straw walker, followed by another straw walker (used also in earlier models). A couple of feed drums further complemented the material flow. There was now only one two-channel fan.
The era of gasoline engines was coming to an end in the U.S. combine market. However, the basic engine in both GMs was a 5.7-liter V8. Allis-Chalmers turbodiesels were available with power outputs of 120, 130, and 158 horsepower. There were now as many as five gears and a road speed of over 30 km/h. A hydrostatic transmission was available as an extra option.
The cab was standard equipment on the L model. Adjustments for the cutting platform, driving speed, and unloading pipe rotation were done with push buttons — a kind of early control armrest. As an option, one could get a monitor that supervised axle rotation speeds as well as a threshing drum pin monitor. The grain tank could be elevated, which increased its capacity to completely new levels.
