Info

William Morris, the founder of Morris Motors, later became Lord Nuffield, and he gave that title to Morris’s agricultural division, which was established in 1948. At the 1948 Smithfield Show, the Nuffield Universal M4 and its petrol‐fuelled version, the PM4, were introduced, along with the three‐wheeled M3, which was aimed primarily at the American market. Their engine was the side‐valve unit from a Morris commercial truck. In 1950 the DM4 was unveiled, fitted with a Perkins diesel engine. The petrol engine’s displacement grew from 3.2 liters to 3.8 liters in 1952. After Morris Motors merged into BMC, the diesel engine was replaced in 1954 by one of BMC’s own designs. By 1955, diesel models accounted for 95 percent of production.

At the time, the Nuffield was a fairly large tractor. The petrol version produced 48 hp, had five forward gears, and could reach almost 30 km/h on the road. It used an 11-inch Borg & Beck clutch and a 12-volt electrical system. The rear‐axle track width was adjustable in true American style—infinitely—by sliding the wheels along the axle.

The data has been collected primarily from brochures. In some cases, sources contain conflicting information. In such cases, we have attempted to select the most reliable information. There is particularly significant variation in speed data, which varies depending on factors such as tire size. For tires, only the size most commonly used in Finland is listed. Other changes during the model history have been addressed in the text section. For the front axle lock, the Finnish term "hammaslukko" (gear lock) is used for all 100% locks.
